DAY BY DAY COURSE OVERVIEW

Day 2 - After a brief review, students will use ScriptE to break down a script and learn the basics of on-set logging and lining.

Top-Call LA Script Supervisor Rebecca Robertson-Szwarja recently made the jump to digital with ScriptE . Check out her story in this month's ScriptE User Profile:

* WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ON SET MOMENT?

Sitting in a room where Marlon Brando rested between takes due to his age and illness and listening to him recite Dover Beach to me.

* WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR RECENT GIGS?

The Kids Are All Right, Love and Other Drugs, Country Strong, The Descendants and I just did my first real stint on TV for an upcoming series called Perfect Couples on NBC

* HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SCRIPT SUPERVISING?

I started scripting supervising 15 years ago, and when I say started, I mean started. I began taking script-supervising classes from Randi Feldman in 1995. I got into the union and got my first union job 13 years ago on the film Bounce, which came after the success of Election and The Opposite of Sex.

* FAVORITE DIRECTOR?

This is a question that I think that no lady should ever answer.

* FAVORITE JOB?

Of course, I shall say, my favorite job is whichever one I am working on. Besides being politically safe, it is truly a difficult question to answer because so many jobs have been fantastic for different reasons, whether it was the pleasure of a civilized shoot in the beautiful wine country with Alexander Payne on Sideways, or living in my favorite city in North America, Montreal, when I worked with Frank Oz and three of the great actors of their generation on The Score, or when I ended The Italian Job in Venice Italy on December 23, or recently when I was able to live and work with some of my favorite people in Hawaii on the upcoming film The Descendants. And even as I write this, I think of all the directors I have worked with and been so fond of and hope they don’t read this and feel offended that they have not been mentioned.

* HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN USING SCRIPTE?

The TV series was the first time that I used ScriptE and it pretty much saved me.

*HOW HAS SCRIPTE CHANGED THE WAY YOU WORK?

I have never liked the look of my work unless I typed it. But TV was going at such a pace and had so many set-ups that I was drowning in paperwork. While using ScriptE I not only input my notes directly into the program instead of writing first and typing later, but at the end of the day I was able to email to everyone with a few quick strokes on the computer instead of emailing typed pages, then scanning and emailing lined pages and hand-written reports. The most important results of using ScriptE on the series were that first, it saved me 30-40 minutes of wrap time every night, and second, I was able to keep all the lined scripts for each episode on my computer. This was great for easy access during re-shoots or additional photography.

* LONGEST SHOOT DAY EVER?

I don’t remember. I’ve never worked over 20 hours.

* STRANGEST LOCATION YOU'VE EVER HAD TO SHOOT IN?

I can’t think of a terribly strange location. But after doing The Road, I thought, there is no location that will bring me down. I can handle any weather situation and I will be fine. Bring it on -- downpours, snow, blizzards, and mud.

* BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED?

Know you are human and can make mistakes – expect it and relax about it. You’ll stay more clear headed.

* BEST MEAL ON A JOB?

I don’t know, but I have this memory of an incredible sushi meal and ice sculptures in the middle of some parking lot downtown that was put out by Tony’s Catering.

* CRAZIEST THING YOU'VE EVER SEEN OR HEARD ON A SET?

On one low budget shoot in my first years of script supervising, I saw a producer and a director get into the fight. They were working together because they had once been very good friends. Well, in fact they had been very good friends until working on the show together. To get the right visual of the fight, you must know that the director was unusually tall and lanky and the producer was on the shorter side. They got into a fistfight, and actually hit the ground of the parking lot. They were rolling on the ground going at each other until a couple of large guys from the transpo department came over and picked both of them up and held them apart.

Some important things to know about ScriptE View.

The attached version of ScriptE View is in the VIEWER ONLY (or demo mode) - a fuller functioning EDITOR MODE will be released in sometime in 2011. Our intention is to give the VIEWER MODE out for FREE to our users and their editors, producers and directors. There will be a fee associated with the EDITOR MODE, when it is released but there will always be a FREE VIEWER MODE available to anyone interested. Now anyone can view all data from your ScriptE file from their MAC laptop. Once authorized, EDITOR MODE - users will be able to input their own editor's notes and selects as well as load clips directly in Final Cut work files .

We're very interested in hearing back from our users as we determine what other features to add to the EDITOR MODE of ScriptE View.

Please note that both MAC and PC versions of ScriptE have exports for ScriptE View and that these exports can be read by the ScriptE View application. The application ScriptE View, however, Is a MAC only Application.

We're happy to share ScriptE View in the VIEWER ONLY mode with anyone on your production. Either mail them your Installer or have them download ScriptE View from our website. But remember, ScriptE View is powerful tool and as with any powerful tool must be handled with car. Please be careful to share your notes with only those properly authorized by your producers. ScriptE is in no way responsible for any unauthorized distribution of your ScriptE View Files.

Now, if your ready to take a big leap into the a totally paperless, 100% digital world of file 21st Century Script Supervision, here's how to get started.

FOR MAC USERS:

IN SCRIPTE

1) install the attached application

2) create a SCRIPTE VIEW WORK FOLDER on your desktop

3) then open any of your ScriptE files

4) from the FILE pull down menu select EXPORT SCRIPTE VIEW XML (include all photos)

5) save that file in the work folder that you created in step 2

you are now ready to open ScriptE View

IN SCRIPTE VIEW

6) open ScriptE View

7) create a new file and save it to the work folder you created earlier

8) from the file pull down menu select IMPORT SCRIPTE VIEW DATA

9) navigate to and open the folder you created in step 4 - then double click on the file with the extension ".xml"

10) Your ScriptE File will now populate itselft with the data from your ScriptE file

11) You will now be looking at the SCRIPTE VIEW SCENE WINDOW

12) Any notes you made to the editor (via the scene window - editor) in ScriptE will appear, along with your breakdown information, timing information, your slugs, etc.

13) double click on any of the scenes and your representative stills and all camera information for that scene will appear

14) hit the show script button and a digital lined script will appear

TO SHARE THIS WITH YOUR DIRECTORS AND EDITORS - TWO METHODS

FOR SMALL FILES (under 10mb) -

1) highlight and then compress your entire work folder - this will create an archive

2) Attach the archive you created in step 1 to an email

3) attach the ScriptE view installer to the same email

FOR LARGE FILES (over 10mb)

1) drag your entire work folder to an external usb drive or burn to a disc

FOR PC USERS:

ScriptE for PC also has an output for ScriptE View MAC VERSION - So PC users can also create a ScriptE View ".xml" output that can be loaded into ScriptE View for MAC.

Since we have not yet completed the PC version of ScriptE View. All PC users have to do is create a ScriptE View .xml output and send that .xml output and the Free ScriptE View Viewer to their editor. You will have to compress and email your .xml output along with the attached MAC version of ScriptE View to your editor, director, producers, etc.

IN SCRIPTE

1) from your file pull down menu select EXPORT TO SCRIPTE VIEW and save the export to your desktop (if you do not see the option EXPORT TO SCRIPTE VIEW - you are in an older version of ScriptE for PC - go to the ScriptE Website and download the most recent update of ScriptE.

TO SHARE THIS WITH YOUR DIRECTORS AND EDITORS - TWO METHODS

FOR SMALL FILES (under 10mb) -

1) highlight and then compress your exported folder - this will create an archive

2) Attach the archive you created in step 1 to an email

3) attach the ScriptE view installer to the same email

FOR LARGE FILES (over 10mb)

1) drag your entire work folder to an external usb drive or burn to a disc

There is a fully loaded sample file included in your download. But please load up some of your old files and let us know what works, what's confusing and what improvements you'd like to see. To say that Boardwalk Empire was a huge job is an understatement. As Script Supervisor for every episode, except the pilot, I wouldn't have been able to manage the job without the help of ScriptE. Below are some thoughts on that job and others:

The big challenge - Soon after the job began I realized there was never an easy day or an easy scene on Boardwalk Empire. We were either dealing with ten page scenes with eight speaking parts, scenes with hundreds of background extras and an overwhelming amount of continuity or an intimate scene that involved very complicated script elements. ScriptE streamlined so much of the work flow and helped minimize my wrap time. I worked alongside Wendy York, a ScriptE trained script supervisor who provided breakdowns and timing for every episode, who also covered our 2nd Unit work. And I brought Robb Foglia up from Philadelphia to fill in. Robb was also proficient in ScriptE and made the transfer of information effortless. On one occasion, he was able to fill in on a moment’s notice, on his own equipment, while we were in the middle of the day’s work. All it took was a flash drive.

How I started working with ScriptE - After years of developing my own methods of working (I'm an "old dog" script supervisor - member of Local 161 since 1994 ) I was able to slowly make the transition to ScriptE because Tony Pettine (ScriptE Co-Creator) and I worked as alternating script supervisors on the TV Series "Kings" for NBC. With Tony at my side and available for questions, I slowly started to use the ScriptE program in combination with hand written notes. (And believe me, I had resistence.) Easing into this new way of working over the first five or six episodes, I transitioned to ScriptE exclusively. After working with ScriptE on a number of jobs since, including Boardwalk Empire, I swear by the program and couldn't imagine going back to pen and pencil.

Any doubts? - As recently as last week I reverted to working with pen and paper on a small job, but after my first day went back to using ScriptE. I was hired on a pilot for NBC/MTV and because the producers said the show would be very "run and gun" I thought it would be easier to go back to working analogue. They said that there would not be a video village (hand held monitors only) and the locations wouldn't accommodate any chairs. We were also working two cameras, hand held, with the Red Camera and we would be doing many setups each day. After the first day (including an hour and a half wrap), I realized I was sorely mistaken to work without my computer and ScriptE. Analogue just didn’t cut it. I quickly transferred my notes into ScriptE the morning of Day Two, set up my computer table along with my own little stool, and had a fine time for the remainder of the shoot. If we got into any really tough situations I would simply work off the back of my printed sides and transfer my notes into the program when the scene was complete.

Back to Boardwalk Empire - most of BE was done with two and often three cameras running for every setup. The most powerful aspect of the ScriptE program, I believe, is the ability to capture stills directly from the monitors. Although we had a full-time playback person on board, our jobs hardly overlapped. He had his work cut out for him running playback for the actors and the director. It was my ability to instantaneously pull up a still from any camera, on any set up, that became vital to my process. Whenever there was a continuity issue I could access images from previous takes within seconds and with the flick of my keyboard enlarge an image, swing my computer for the director to see and declare, "Look - here it is!" It really helped the continuity components of the job.

In conclusion – At the end of the season since most of the paperwork was exchanged digitally I only had one big shopping bag of paper to recycle instead of a mountain range of paperwork all over my office. Hey, I'm also doing something good for the environment - right! Let's see if I can eliminate paper all together in Season Two. I’m looking forward to going back to the show next year – the scripts are great, the actors are terrific and the production value is amazing. I hope you all get a chance to check out the Season Premiere next Sunday, Sept. 19^th on HBO.

* WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ON SET MOMENT?

In 1997, I worked on a film with Jason Robards called HEARTWOOD. He had a major role in the film and was with us for over 2 weeks. In that time I had lots of really interesting conversations with him which began the first day he was on set. We shared a common interest in theology and his son was earning his degree in theology at the time at Boston College. A few days into the shoot, he brought his personal camera to set and he asked me if he could have his picture taken with me with his camera! What the...?! This was one of my first features and I was too shy to ask him for a photo though I wanted one. He asked a crew member to take some photos of us, and then I asked him if I could get a photo with him with my camera. He said.....YES, of course!! That was so cool!!

Another favorite moment was when we were shooting IN THE BEDROOM in Maine the summer of 2000. There is a scene where Sissy Spacek comes home to find that her son has been beaten by his girlfriend's soon to be ex-husband. Sissy's character grabs the wireless home phone and insists on calling the police. We shot the Master, and went in for coverage. The scene was running nearly a couple of minutes. After the first take of the new set-up, the moment that director Todd Field called cut, and after she had delivered a nearly flawless performance - as always - Sissy shouts over to me: "Virginia, I'm so sorry. I wasn't holding the phone correctly. I'll do it right the next time." Of course, when I heard her shout my name as soon as we cut, I thought: "Crap, I'm in trouble....!" When I realized she was busting herself, I cracked up. All I could say was: "Thanks, Sissy." I worked with her again on a film called LAKE CITY shot in Richmond, Virginia. She is such a delightful person!

* WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR RECENT GIGS?

In the Fall of 2009, I worked in Los Angeles on a 23 day feature shoot: ANSWERS TO NOTHING, starring Dane Cook, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Barbara Hershey. ATN was written and directed by Matt Leutwyler, a writer, director, producer that I have been working with since 1998. I've worked on 4 features with Matt as his Script Super. I've also worked on 3 other features produced by Ambush Entertainment, his production company which he and business partner/producer Miranda Bailey founded and manage together.

In Fall of 2008, I worked in New York City on another 20 something day feature shoot: EVERY DAY, starring Liev Schreiber, Helen Hunt, Eddie Izzard and Carla Gugino. This was writer/director Richard Levine's maiden voyage as a feature film director, and also an Ambush Entertainment production. Richard is the co-executive producer of NIP/TUCK and had directed several episodes of NIP/TUCK before taking the feature plunge.

In Summer of 2008, I worked on THE RIVER WHY, a 25 day shoot in and around Portland, Oregon. This was super challenging because 17 of those days required me to wear waders and boots and to spend most of my time wading through rivers, in and out of rivers, or on a pontoon on the rapids. The Red camera was mounted on a Jib Arm and rigged onto the pontoon boat and I got to ride on the boat with the director, DP, AC and Key Grip. FUN!!!

In Spring of 2008, I worked in San Francisco, just 30-ish minutes from Martinez where I live, on a feature called: LA MISSION starring Benjamin Bratt, Erika Alexander, and Jeremy Ray Valdez. We had a luxurious 30 days to shoot this one. LA MISSION was written and directed by Ben's brother, Peter Bratt. Working with the Bratt brothers was incredible for many reasons and this was an amazing production experience for me. This was also the first time that I worked on a film with a Green Consultant who worked with every department and throughout production to make us as environmentally friendly as possible. That was awesome!!

* HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SCRIPT SUPERVISING?

I began Script Supervising in 1993. I have made it to the 17 year mark..... Unbelievable!

* FAVORITE DIRECTOR?

This is not a fair question..... I enjoy and appreciate many things about the diverse group of directors I have worked with. Peter Bratt affirms and empowers everyone around him, and is a master at fostering community among everyone involved in his production. Matt Leutwyler is fun, feisty and super savvy. He creates a working environment where laughter carries the day, every moment, every day - except when cameras are rolling. Todd Field is incredibly intense and precise so super intelligent. He's truly a film auteur in my estimation. I learn so much from working with Todd and I am also very honored that he always asks me for my thoughts on each take and for creative input always. Richard Levine is uber-Zen on set, he brings a lot of heart to his work and a lot of compassion. Hunter Hill and Perry Moore were like kids in a candy shop on the set of LAKE CITY, their co-directorial debut. From the moment I first interviewed with them, they invited me to work with them as a creative collaborator. That was such a gift!

* FAVORITE JOB?

LA MISSION was my favorite shoot because of the way the Bratt brothers created an incredible community experience for everyone involved with the film from start to finish. Peter and Ben began our first production meeting stating that they consider everyone working on the film to be their relatives. They were raised in the Native American spiritual tradition and had a native elder pray a blessing at beginning of the meeting. They burned cedar in an abalone shell and the smoking cedar was taken around the room for anyone who wanted to bless themselves with the smoke. This was done in such a way as not to force anyone to participate if they didn't want to. It was the most amazing inauguration of a production I have ever experienced and it set the tone for the rest of the shoot. Every one who worked on that film felt like they had never bonded so much with their co-workers before that shoot. The energy of cooperation and community was so positive before, during and after principal photography. In addition, because Ben and Peter grew up in San Francisco the sons of a peace and justice activist (their mother) who was also a nurse, the Bratt family is closely tied in with the community of the Mission District of SF, the Mexican and Latino district of the city, as well as with the broader community of social activists. This meant that throughout production, we had tremendous support and participation by the local community and dozens upon dozens of Bratt family friends and supporters. Sometimes it felt like a huge block party where we happened to be shooting a film. Every one was incredibly focused on making this film a success. It was exhilirating.

* UNION SHOUT OUT -

I LOVE THE UNION!! I am so grateful to be a member of Local 161. I've always been a supporter of unions, since I was a little kid. My Dad was a union president when I was in grammar school, though I had very little understanding at that time what that meant. My favorite Local 161/Union story is this: a year after IN THE BEDROOM was released and had made a huge profit, I unexpectedly received a check in the mail for a sum equal the total amount that I had earned on the film during production. It was a super low budget film we shot in five 6-day weeks (ugh!) in Rockport, Maine. I made about $200 a day. Which amounted to $1200 a week. We averaged 15 hour days. Sundays off were spent in bed until dinner time when I would stumble out of bed and walk in a daze to eat lobster for dinner ($12.95 for a whole lobster, potatoes and corn....Yay !!!) I had no idea that nearly 2 years after we shot the film I would be receiving a bonus check equaling my full salary (over $7000). I was invited to join Local 161 in order to work on IN THE BEDROOM. Over these several years, our amazing union business agent, Colleen Donahue, has supported and assisted me in so many, many ways. Our Office Manager, Rufina Shumunova, has also been a wonderful support. I couldn't imagine doing this work without them and without being a part of Local 161.

* HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN USING SCRIPTE?

I began using Scripte in the Fall of 2007 on a film called WONDERFUL WORLD starring Matthew Broderick. I've done 5 features with Scripte: WONDERFUL WORLD, LA MISSION, THE RIVER WHY, EVERY DAY, and ANSWERS TO NOTHING. I've also done numerous lengthy industrial shoots and numerous commercials with Scripte.

* HOW HAS SCRIPTE CHANGED THE WAY YOU WORK?

I definitely work faster and smarter with Scripte. It has allowed me to do more extensive prep in less time than the way I used to work. When production begins, I now have far more information at my fingertips and can also focus on what's happening in the moment on set with far less distractions or concerns about missing important elements or info. I work mostly on low budget indie films that budget for very little Script Super prep time. One HUGE benefit to using Scripte for me has been that at wrap when I am typically exhausted and ready to get off set and collapse into bed, my work is done in minutes rather than the old standard time that sometimes stretched from an hour to 2 hours depending on the complexity of the day I worked and the quality (or lack thereof) of the production copier. Now I finish my paperwork in 10 to 15 minutes and either email the lined script and facing pages, the production report, and various other reports (with coverage photos!!) to the ADs and POC. Or I copy all of these reports to a zip drive and hand it over to the ADs to copy to their computer. It's so AMAZING!! I still pinch myself! ;-) Another HUGE benefit for me has been that Scripte has removed 80% of the physical pain and stress that I used to experience because of the nature of my job. I am no longer bending over a bulky, heavy, and unwieldy 3" binder furiously trying to make 2 sets of notes while keeping up on all of everything else on my plate. On top of that, because of the image capture feature, my ability to keep on top of continuity has increased exponentially and the ability to give producers, directors and DPs instant access to these photos has not only impressed but has also saved precious production time. Taking notes now is a snap and accessing info for producers, directors, props, DPs...anyone who needs to know...is a quick keyboard click away. I would never do a feature without Scripte nor a commercial. Whether I'm on a short of lengthy shoot, Scripte makes my job truly a pleasure because it has taken so much of the minutiae off of my plate AND it also makes me look GREAT in the eyes of my employers because my notes are so neat and organized every time. Every editor and assistant editor I have worked with has flipped over Scripte as well. They love it. Scripte has totally added value to my reputation as a professional in this field. (i love you, Scripte!!!)

* LONGEST SHOOT DAY EVER?

26 hours on a feature film in San Francisco, and 24 hours on an infomercial at Marine World in Vallejo, CA. YUCK!!! Humans shouldn't work that long...ever....

* STRANGEST LOCATION YOU'VE EVER HAD TO SHOOT IN?

A really, really, really SMELLY OLD dilapidated house that was also crammed wall to wall with thousands of things....like junky STUFF you'd find in a low end antique or pawn shop. The house was on a huge piece of property and was actually a junk yard, old trashed vehicles and farm equipment, a huge mound of rubber tires and trash was scattered from one end of the property to the other. The people who lived in the house were at home when we were shooting. Whenever the crew made eye contact with one another, we couldn't refrain from grimacing (out of eye shot of the owners, of course) expressing our horror at the SMELL which seemed to be a combo of animal excrement and urine, mold, rotten food, etc. The house was super, super dark and dank, and totally filthy from floor to ceiling. It was truly bizarre to be in that house and shooting. Bizarre and sad, really. Every one on crew basically sucked it up and went about our business as quickly as we possibly could. Thankfully we were out of there in about 3 hours. They brought counselors in at lunch to help us process..... (just kidding, but they should have!!)

Another strange location, though more humorous was being trapped in the Porn closet of a Video store with Mischa Barton's Mom. This was the only place they could set up the monitor for the director, so only he and Mom and I could be there. We were surrounded by naked body parts in strange and unusual positions...kind of difficult having a conversation with Mischa's Mom when just over her shoulder were scads of penises and.... you get the picture....

* BEST PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED?

"Buy Scripte!!" I actually said that to myself after having an amazing and wonderful first conversation with Tony Pettine. He and Bob McFarlane are two of the finest people on this planet.

2nd best advice.... "Quiet on set!" --- things go faster when we are......q-u-i-e-t.....and then we get to go home!! ;-)

* BEST MEAL ON A JOB?

Lobster dinner the night before beginning shoot for IN THE BEDROOM. All cast and crew were invited. That was so fun and delicious. It was my first lobster ever, and I managed to meet Sissy for the first time after trying to crack open one of my claws and inadvertently snapping shut the claw cracker launching the whole claw across the room where it just missed Sissy and Tom Wilkinson, landing on the floor at their feet.

* CRAZIEST THING YOU'VE EVER SEEN OR HEARD ON A SET?

Adding pdf storyboards to your facing pages

Here are streamlined steps to putting storyboards into your facing pages. We'll do a quicktime demo video for our training page soon but in the meantime.
A) create a new folder for your individual storyboard images
B) name your new folder something along the lines of job4255 storyboard images - something easy to locate
C) assign each board a scene number (for example 101, 102, 103 etc.
D) open the pdf of the storyboards
E) from the FILE pull down menu, select GRAB and then SELECTION.
F) trace the first frame and then release the cursor - this will create a .tiff image file of the selected section of screen
G) select SAVE AS and choose the FILE FORMAT "JPEG" name the file something that is easy to place with the spot and job (for example: 101jcpJOB4225) and save it to the folder created in step A
H) repeat this for the boards
When you have completed the job you can select the feature GRAB PHOTOS and can match the screen capture jpegs from the storyboard folder you created in step A) .

Congrats to Wrestler - Golden Globe Nods

Congratulations to The Wrestler for it's big Best Film win at the Venice Film Festival and it's Golden Globe nominations.

ScriptE co-creator Anthony Pettine was script supervisor on acclaimed filmmaker Darren Aronofsky's latest work.

Says Pettine, "Because we shot much of the wrestling footage doc style during real wrestling events, my digital stills were a great reference for matching eye lines for close ups."

"There was one scene in particular where ScriptE really saved the day. We shot a wide shot of Mickey (Rourke) getting dressed for a wrestling match and then had to go in for coverage. Because I had captured stills for each step of Mickey dressing, I was able to sit just off camera, flip through my wide shot, and call out each of the 80 steps there were to putting on his costume. Both Darren and Mickey were blown away."

ScriptE in Chicago - Bob and Mary Tallman on the set of ER

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of meeting pro script supervisor Mary Tallman, one of our ScriptE customers, on the set of ER on NBC. Mary had contacted us with some questions as she prepared for her upcoming shoot in Chicago. I just happened to be planning a road trip to my hometown in Illinois for that same week so I let Mary know that I would be passing by Chicago and would love to stop and meet her. She responded enthusiastically.

On Friday, after meeting my uncle for dinner, I found a motel and checked my email. Mary had sent me the location where they would be shooting. Actually, she mentioned a couple of locations so I looked them up on Google Maps and figured out where I needed to go. Saturday morning I got up and headed for Chicago. When I arrived in the vicinity of where I thought I was supposed to be, I searched for a place to park. After circling a few blocks I found a parking garage and turned into it, pulled into one of the two ticket gates and pressed the button for a ticket. There were none left. I noticed a slot for a credit card so I put one in. It popped back out and a message appeared that said it couldn't be processed at this time. I pressed the intercom button and told the person who answered about my situation and she said I would have to back up and go through the other gate. The problem was, I was pulling a small U-Haul trailer with a piano in it. That was the reason for my road trip to Illinois. So, with other cars honking at me, I had to back down the ramp and around a corner so I could pull into the next gate. The stress was beginning to build.

I pulled into the next gate and pushed the button. The ticket popped out and the gate went up. After my truck passed under the raised gate, the gate decided that I was through and started to come down before the trailer had passed through. I heard a crash and hit the brakes. Fortunately, the gate just popped back up. I hadn't broken it. At least I don't think I did.

Next, it was up three floors of winding concrete and into the parking area where I called Mary to confirm where I was supposed to go from here. To my dismay, I had misinterpreted the email and was supposed to be about seven miles north of where I was. More stress. At this point, I'm not even sure I can get out of the parking garage without breaking something. But, I made my way down the three floors of winding concrete to the exit. I inserted my ticket and was informed by the little red numbers that I owed six dollars for my little tour of their fine parking garage. I inserted my credit card, the gate went up and I went through. But, not without one last crash of the gate on the trailer. I looked around for parking garage attendants but saw no one. The gate was fine so I hit the gas and headed into the sunshine.

I made my way to the real location and found a plain, old-fashioned asphalt parking lot and parked. Then, after a short walk on a beautiful day to calm my nerves, I arrived at the set and found Mary. That was fun. Mary is a very enthusiastic person and is really getting the hang of ScriptE. She showed me her setup and her work in ScriptE. I was able to answer a few questions for her and give her a few tips but she's doing great. She told me of the positive reaction to ScriptE she has gotten from the other folks working on the production.

After completing the first shot there was a little excitement on set. Michelle Obama arrived on set to have lunch with Angela Bassett. Naturally, everyone gathered around to take pictures of the potential First Lady. She chatted with some of the production folks and posed for a few pictures then left for lunch as we moved to a new location.

Once everything was set up at the new location, Mrs. Obama returned to the set along with her daughters and some friends. The kids all climbed into the director chairs around the monitors so they could watch the takes. Mary was already positioned there with her laptop and Sasha Obama climbed up on her lap. So, Mary showed her ScriptE and told her how to capture stills during a take which she did for a couple of takes. Little will the production folks know when they see the coverage reports that the stills were captured by Sasha Obama.

Naturally, the area was surrounded by Secret Service agents. One of them happened to be standing about three feet from me looking out across the park. Suddenly, he turns around, leans in close and asks, "Are you with the production?" I told him I was with Mary, the Script Supervisor. He turned away, lifted his hand to his mouth and spoke into his sleeve, "Yeah. He's with the production."

My involvement with ScriptE has been very interesting and just keeps getting more interesting. Thanks a lot Mary for allowing me to visit you on the set of ER. I really enjoyed meeting you.

My Summer with ScriptE (Part 1)

Hello everybody. ScriptE Co-Creator Tony Pettine here. Can't believe it's been an entire year but I'm happy to say ScriptE is one year old! It was a busy summer with lots of new users working with ScriptE in the field. I even managed to squeeze in a little time doing what I love to do best - Script Supervise!

Here's PART I...

After a busy Spring of shooting -- I went right from the new Darren Aronofosky film "The Wrestler" to a fun but grueling Spring shoot working with horror legend Wes Craven on his new film "25/8". After a solid 5 months of shooting, I was ready to take some time with my wife and girls back home in our little cabin in the woods. But after about a week off, ScriptE quickly started to fill my days again. Here are some of my favorite shots from my time with the great Wes Craven.

I was wrapping up my final reports to the editor on "25/8", NY Script Supervisor Diane Hounsell invited me to speak at the New York Script Supervisor's Network in New York. ScriptE User's Jodi Domanic-Riccio and Rebecca Breckel came out and shared their experiences using ScriptE with the other members of the Network. We have since welcomed several new customers from the network to the ScriptE family and are looking forward to another visit with the NYSSN in the near future.

(My trusted 2nd unit Script Supervisor Jodi Domanic-Riccio explains some of the finer points of ScriptE to new ScriptE User Rebecca Breckel.

My love for teaching has really been re-born this summer. Along with the steady stream of one on one User training sessions, I've also started teaching dual Script Supervision skill set and ScriptE tutorials as well. It turns out teaching ScriptE is a wonderful way to teach the skills of Script Supervision. I've had some wonderful intensive user tutorials -- most recently with two new Script Supervisors Lara St. Thomas and Nicole Gilliam. Since that training session both these talented new ScriptE's have already gone out and used ScriptE in the field. Way to go ladies! We're proud of you.

Script Supervision guru Randi Feldman flew in from Hollywood and invited me to visit her Script Supervision seminar in New York. It was a real treat to see Randi again and to get the opportunity to work with her students. I even had the intimidating honor of teaching the master herself the joys of ScriptE. We've since welcomed several of Randi's students to the ScriptE family and Randi has now hosted two of our LA demos. Thanks Randi!

Tony Pettine speaks to NYSSN, Sunday June 29th, 2008

NYC, New York - ScriptE Systems was invited to perform a demo of it's script supervision software Sunday 6/29/08 for the New York Script Supervisors Network (NYSSN). NYSSN is a not-for-profit organization encouraging community and education of film professionals practicing in the craft of script supervision.

The group met at 440 Studios on Layfayette St. The presentation started at around 11:30 am. Everyone took a short break around 1pm, but the demo went on until close to 3pm. ScriptE co-creator and script supervisor Tony Pettine spoke for nearly four hours about the many exciting features in ScriptE software. He fielded questions from the NYSSN members and he provided many helpful tips and shortcuts to using the software.

Tony utilized a projector to display large images of the ScriptE work pages from his MacBook Pro laptop so that everyone in the room could observe the process. Tony demonstrated many of ScriptE's unique features including image capture, time code capture, importing scripts from Final Draft and ScriptE's new Advertising Tools. Tony also showed the group how clean and precise the fully computer generated Daily Reports and "wrap out" to production can be using ScriptE. Much of what was covered can also be found online through the tutorials created by ScriptE co-creator Bob McFarlane at www.scriptesystems.com.

ScriptE wishes to express their thanks to ss Diane Hounsell for hosting the event and giving Tony the opportunity to discuss digital script supervision with the group. The turnout was very good and the questions were from the participants fantastic. Big thanks goes to ss Jodi Domanic-Riccio for coming out and sharing terrific testimony about her work using ScriptE in the field. It was great seeing ScriptE owner ss Rebecca Breckel at the event and so many new friends. Tony and Bob are looking forward to training everyone all new and seasoned software users to become ScriptE Certified - sessions to begin in early Fall '08.

Team ScriptE will be doing a similar class for west coast script supervisors at the IATSE 871 local in August '08.
